Do you have so much content for Poser and Daz/Studio that you have lost count of what is installed and where to find it? It doesn't have to be like that. This tutorial will teach you to organize your files. Starting with the careful organization of downloads, it will take you through the creation of external runtimes, and how best to install and further organize the files within those runtimes.

Most of the files you download from DAZ Productions and other stores, including freebies, will be formatted for Poser. I will not go into a detailed explanation here, just know that Daz/Studio can and does use most Poser formatted files, with a few exceptions. Because the majority of files are available in this format, this tutorial will focus on Poser formatted files, with a further explanation of Daz/Studio formats at the end.

No matter how many files you have already installed into your Poser or Daz Runtimes, for now, at least, ignore them.. What we are doing in this tutorial is an exercise that will help you better understand how to organize your files. Whether you are new to this, or already familiar with Poser file structures, the best way to learn is by doing. So for the sake of continuity you will need the files used for the tutorial – the free Bridge Starter Pack available from DAZ Productions, and the two sample zip downloads I have prepared for you. The links to these can be found to the left of the page on Step One.

The folder names I will be using are suggestions. Use them for this tutorial, as it will help you to understand, but once you know the how of organizing, you can, of course, rename your files and folders as you wish.

One last note: I do not own a MAC. These instructions are primarily for PC users - however, if you are working from a MAC, you can still follow the instructions - just adapt them to your machine and be careful not to overwrite files.

Take your time, do the exercises, and be sure you understand each step before moving on to the next. Once you understand about organizing your files, you will realize how easy it is. Like anything, it will require some effort in the beginning - but once you have your files re-organized, your work and play in Poser and Daz Studio will flow so much more smoothly, because you won't be interrupted by trying to find sometihing. You will know exactly where it is, because you will have organized your files in a way that makes sense to YOU.

Enjoy!  - judee
